These are the typical conventions that we found:
- The lighting is often quite dark.
- Lots of different camera angles are used.
- Black and white is used in parts of the video sometimes.
- Sometimes live performance mixed with narrative.
- The colours and lighting used in the video changes depending on lyrics and tempo of the song.
- Singer/Band tends to wear casual clothing.
- Close Ups are used quite often to show the emotions of the characters which also shows the audience the tone of the song and video.
- The mise-en-scene reflects the mood of the characters and the tone of the music.
- The artist/band tend to predominate the music video - they are usually the main character(s).
- The pace of the editing fits the pace of the music.
- A cameo is also quite common in a pop-rock/alternative rock music video which is where the band or artist features in the video (possibly as the main character) but they do not perform.
