Conventions Of A Pop-Rock Video

To ensure that our own music video will look like it could belong in the professional media world, we need to research and understand the conventions of typical Pop-Rock music videos.
These are the typical conventions that we found:
  • The lighting is often quite dark.
  • Lots of different camera angles are used.
  • Black and white is used in parts of the video sometimes.
  • Sometimes live performance mixed with narrative.
  • The colours and lighting used in the video changes depending on lyrics and tempo of the song.
  • Singer/Band tends to wear casual clothing.
  • Close Ups are used quite often to show the emotions of the characters which also shows the audience the tone of the song and video.
  • The mise-en-scene reflects the mood of the characters and the tone of the music.
  • The artist/band tend to predominate the music video - they are usually the main character(s).
  • The pace of the editing fits the pace of the music.
  • A cameo is also quite common in a pop-rock/alternative rock music video which is where the band or artist features in the video (possibly as the main character) but they do not perform.
